3 Tips for Day Trips from Dublin

Tip 1. Get a Leap Card for easier travel around Dublin County & City. The TFI Leap Card is the most convenient way to pay for your public transport travel. At the time of writing (January 2023), journeys cost up to 31% less if you use a LEAP card when compared to using cash. You can buy a Leap card from the vending machines located in train stations or from many newsagent shops around the City. If you are using your Leap Card across the Public Transport Network your weekly spending will be automatically capped at €32.00 for an adult card or €16.00 for a young adult card (age 19-23). Topping up your credit on the Leap Card is easy, you can use an APP on your telephone, top up at a machine in the train station or you can drop into any of the Leap Card Agents to top up your card.

Tip 2. Use your LEAP Card to Visit the Fishing Village of Howth which is easily assessable using the DART train (Public Transport). Howth is a small fishing village located just 30 minutes from Dublin. It is a popular day trip for tourists visiting the city. Howth is famous for its fishing harbour, its many seafood restaurants, and fishmongers. It is also famous for the Cliff Walk and if you’re a nature lover, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of hiking trails to explore.

Tip 3. Use your LEAP Card to Take the DART train south from Dublin City to Greystones. Along this route you’ll see Sandymount Strand, a Blue Flag beach and the infamous Poolbeg Chimneys (seen from the plane as you make your descent into Dublin Airport). Then Killiney Beach, which is a particularly beautiful part of the coastline (this area has often been compared to the Bay of Naples). The most spectacular part of the route is the journey between Bray and Greystones. This scenic train line was built in 1834, cut out of the hill side just a few metres above the sea.
