The Need for Academic Presentation Skills
I remember, before going to university I had a sense of excitement. That I was about to learn from the best quality teachers in my life so far. The reality was, to be honest, a little disappointing. Yes, my professors knew a lot about their respective subject areas, but this did not necessarily mean that they were able to convey their knowledge in an engaging and involving manner. That’s not to say that I didn’t have great professors also, just that although the standard of knowledge was high, the ability to effectively transmit that knowledge was not uniform. For me, this highlights the need for Academic Presentation Skills.
At Atlantic Language Galway, we offer a one-week course which aims to reinvigorate the ‘presentation muscles’ of visiting academics. The course participants vary greatly in terms of academic discipline, knowledge of English and level of confidence but are united in their desire to brush up on their English communication skills within an academic context. Obviously, the specific requirements of this English may differ depending on country and discipline and, to this end, we do not offer a ‘one size fits all’ approach, but rather a flexible framework and tools that build confidence and competence within a friendly and encouraging environment.
We prioritise clarity and audience engagement but allow time for self-reflection, peer review and group discussion of the ideas presented. We encourage learners to engage with and try out new techniques. To step out of their comfort zones while remaining in an atmosphere of open-minded support. Ideally, by the end of the course students will not only feel more confident about the skills they already possess but will have added a few more strings to their bows and be ready to step in front of their students confident in their English and ready to deliver clear and engaging Academic Presentations.
